     JONATHAN MILLER  CLIVE,
Jonathan Miller Clive, PhD, a biostatistician and
longtime member of the University of Connecticut Health Center research  faculty, died on          Friday, (February 27, 2004) after a long illness. He was 58 and lived in Farmington.                   Family and friends loved Jon as a man of  charisma and wit as well as intellect. After                    undergraduate studies in  mathematics at the University of Chicago, he earned his                      doctorate in  biostatistics at Yale University with a specialty in Bayesian statistics.
His original research into mathematical fuzzy sets aided in developing
techniques to quantify ``soft'' variables such as human judgment and
experience. In professional positions at Duke University in the 1970s and
later as director of biostatistical research at the University of Connecticut, Jon helped                  medical and dental researchers design experimental  studies and interpret data on a broad       scale. A popular teacher of  biostatistics and computer science to UConn graduate students,       he also collaborated in studies for the National Institutes of Health and
repeatedly served as an NIH grant juror. Jon is survived by his mother,
Dorothy Clive; two brothers, David and Michael; a  sister-in-law, Gloria Vigliani; two nieces,         Julia and Pia  Clive; and a loving extended family of cousins, aunts and
uncles. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at
Temple Emanuel, 150 Derby Ave., Orange. In lieu of flowers, contributions
may be sent to: The UConn Foundation-Jonathan Clive, PhD
